Cattle

Fearn Farm is home to a herd of 110 suckler cows, with 60 of these being crossbred commercial cows which run alongside 40 pedigree Beef Shorthorn cows. A small herd of Luing cattle is run on the Sutherland block.

The pedigree and commercial herds are managed in largely the same way, with all cows outwintered on barley stubbles and the same sires used across both the commercial and pedigree herds where possible.

All cattle on the farm are of a high health status, with the herd being BVD accredited, tested clear for Leptospirosis and IBR and classified as Johnes risk level one.

Progeny from the commercial herd are either retained as replacements or sold as finished stock, with finished heifers sold to Morrisons through Woodhead Brothers and prime bulls sold on a deadweight basis to ABP.

The Beef Shorthorn herd is fully performance recorded and has been since its foundation and while performance figures are not the focus of the breeding strategy close attention is paid to them when sourcing stock bulls.
