The small Luing herd is run on the Sutherland block to maximise output from what is a challenging farm. Formed with 10 heifers purchased from Dingwall Market and 12 in-calf cows bought from the Cadzow Brothers, Luing, the herd is being used to help improve grassland on the Sutherland block.

A spring calving herd the cows are outwintered on some of the harder ground of the farm and current herd sire Luing Dollar is being used with the aim of breeding high quality female replacements.

The long-term aim for the herd is to expand numbers to 40-50 cows and to potentially use a Simmental sire across a portion of the herd to breed replacements for the commercial herd at Fearn Farm.
