Crops at Fearn Farm
Over the years cropping patterns have changed at Fearn, we have grown most cereal crops in the past but now focus on spring barley for the malting market and feed which we use on farm and oats which are also utilised on farm. Along side cereal crops various forage crops are grown incluisng, swedes, forage rape, stubble turnips and hybrid forages all of which are utilised by livestock through the winter.
The arable enterprise at Fearn Farm has been traditionally based on the production of high quality malting barley for the local whisky industry.
The area we grow has signicicantly reduced in recent years due to falling demand and we have increased the area of grass and forage grown as a result.
- Laureate Spring Barley which is sold through local co-operative Highland Grain or retained for our own use.
- Canyon Spring Oats grown for our own use.
- Peas grown for our own use.
- Forage Crops – Swedes, Stubble Turnips and Forage Rape play a key role in our wintering strategy for our livestock.
- All Spring Barley stubbles have cover crops stitched in after harvest to provide another source of feed over the winter period.
- Most straw is retained for our own use but we do sell a little surplus.
- Hay and Silage is another key ingredient in our winter ration.
