Introduction to Livestock
As time goes by we have changed our approach to breeding livestock, we have dabbled with fancy cattle and high input sheep but they just dont suit us, the way we want to farm or our beliefs.
We focus on breeding productive females which get pregnant on a regular basis and which can outwinter without hard feed and have strong maternal instincts in the spring. We will put the work in to make sure these animals have every opportunity to thrive in our systems but if they dont match our effort there is only one route forward for them, they are gone!
Culling hard enables us to lift production on an annual basis, our team are ruthless and will identify under achievers at any stage throughout the year.
Cattle
Three breeds one aim, functional females which can outwinter with ease whilst maintaining body condition.
Anything not suitable for breeding must have the ability to finish off grass by 20 months if required although depending on where the cereal price is intensively finishing is an option thats sometimes taken. When availale surplus steers and heifers are supplied to Shore our own resteraunt in the Seaboard villages.
Sheep
Our aim with our sheep flocks mirror our cattle, functional low fuss females which just get on woth the job. Anything that gives us hassle in our outdoor lambing flocks will be marked so that they join the indoor lambing flocks the following year. Our rams are outwintered on firage and hay and culled hard at every opportunity ensuring only the best reach our ‘Great from Grass’ sale day in August.
