Beef Shorthorns
Over the past thirty years we have grown our herd of Beef Shorthorn cows with a strong focus on commercial beef production, our cows which out winter are extremely functional and showcase what the breed is all about.
In the early days cow families were bought from Calrossie, and over the years we have added genetics from New Zealand and Australia via ET and AI and we are always on the lookout for new bloodlines which will enhance our breeding program.
Performance recording is something we have stuck with from the start and our cows are all now classified, we have a strict culling policy which means we are continually improving the quality and functionality of the herd.
Our aim has always been to build a herd of cows which we are proud of and which deliver in many different ways, they need to be able to produce a saleable product whether its high quality Scotch Beef, breeding females for retention or sale and breeding bulls which will perform in herds throughout the country.
With the herd now numbering 100 cows we have strength and depth in numbers and have the capacity to keep several bulls which can be matched with cows to produce calves that will meet the demands of the modern beef industry.
We aim to sell 15-20 Beef Shorthorn bulls per year which are made available for sale once they have been back fat scanned each May, we also have surplus females available from time to time, please get in touch to discuss your requirements.
Cow Families
Our original family is our Moniques which trace back to one of the original Maine Anjou cows brought into the country by Calrossie, this was followed by a Fairy Clippers which came from Dunsyre.
Silver Maisie’s came from Canada, the late Rolly Bateman was involved in sourcing these and sent many emnbryos over to the UK following foot and mouth.
Our Augusta bloodline comes from a cow bought at the Coldrochie dispersal, the same day we bought Godfather back.
Bonny, Phyliss, Isobel, Juliet, Lassie families all came from New Zealand when we bought females from the Austin family dispersal, this was a once a lifetime opportunity when everything lined up enabling us to bring in different bloodlines which have without doubt improved our herd.
Abbey’s have been graded up at Fearn, they link back to Simmental cross cows which have been graded up over time.

Firefox of Upsall
Purchased in 2020 as cover for our existing bull team which was on the young side at the time this bull has proven himself a massive asset to us being super easy calving and leaving daughters who are moderate framed easy doing cows with tremendous udders. He’s a Mandalong Super Elephant son, now 13 years of age and still going strong.
Fearn No Limits
No limits made his way to the Dunsyre herd as a yearling at the same time Nimrod and Nightrider came north. When we saw him last year on our way home from judging the north of England herd competition even with a hurt shoulder it was fair to say he impressed as did the many calves Carey had on the ground by him. When we got the opportunity for him to come home it wasn’t something we were going to pass up.
Palmerston of Upsall
Palmerston was purchased at Stirling in 2022 for 25’000gns which is the highest we have ever paid for a bull. We were drawn to Palmerston firstly on paper where of the 18 sets of EBV’s 14 are in the top 10% and 7 of those in the top 1%. Palmerston is a real rectangle of beef, he’s got depth right the way through and carries himself really well. Our first crop of calves from Palmerston have really impressed us and we’re looking forward to seeing how they grow on and perform in the coming years.
Mayfield Rembrandt
We first saw Rembrandt when we were judging the north of England herd competition in the summer of 2022. He was the standout bull in a strong field of bulls and when we saw his breeding, being sired by the $48,000 Royalla Rembrandt and out of the current world record priced shorthorn cow, the $90,000 Sprys Miss Buddy M36. Rembrandt is a moderate sized, seriously thick, easy fleshing bull with a huge eye muscle scan. His first two crops of calves are extremely impressive having inherited his easy fleshing and easy going nature.

Luing
Our herd of Luings spends the summer at Cambusmore in the county of Sutherland 15 miles north of our home farm at Fearn.
Our original cows came from the Cadzow brothers Isle of Luing and at the time we farmed further up the coast and hence the herd prefix Sutherland which has remained ever since.
We chose Luings to utilise poorer quality pasture and they have proved to be extremely useful tool when revitalising older and poor quality pasture on farms were pasture quality hasn’t been a focus under previous management.
With the herd now numbering 70 breeding females which produces heifers which are kept for replacements or sold as bulling heifers or in calf. We keep a few bulls for our own use or to sell to others and the rest of the males calves are finished at Fearn.
Sutherland Zeus
Zeus is a homebred son of Luing Rustler who left a real stamp on our herd, leaving easy fleshing thick set cows with great udders. Zeus was kept as rustlers time had ended but we didn’t want to lose his genetics as we felt we could still use them more.
That coupled with his thick set deep body and excellent locomotion and feet made him the ideal candidate to fill his sires shoes.
Plenderleith Wizzard
Wizard was bought as a 4 year old after his second breeding season at Craigdarroch where his first three bulls sold at the society sale to a top of 32,000gns and with an average in excess of 20,000gns.
He has bred exceptionally well for us leaving milky feminine females which are a pleasure to work with, we have retained most of them for breeding and also have a son Sutherland Commanchie retained for use in the herd.
Berryfell Y1
Bought with a few heifers from the Berryfell reduction we liked the easy fleshing of this bull, he’s also polled something we would like to develop further within the herd.
Sutherland Commanche
With Wizzard getting a little older we were keen to retain a son and this bull ticked all the boxes, he’s polled and has held his condition well in our out wintering area.
Our partner herd at Scotsburn have bought a have share in this bull.
Dirnanean Chief
New to the bull team in 2025 Chief was purchased at the Incheoch on farm sale for £7000, his mother is an outstanding cow and we look forward to seeing how his genetics compliment what we have on farm.
Aberdeen Angus
We have recently purchased six Aberdeen angus heifers from the Strathglass herd and hope to build numbers slowly with the aim of producing docile easy fleshed cattle with good foraging ability. We see the introduction of a third breed as a natural step to take and in time will give buyers the opportunity to buy bulls produced on the same naturally reared system as our other breeds.

Health Status is very important to us, we work closely with Lucy from Foundry vets to ensure we maintain high standards and routinely test all herds.
